I’m actually more excited for this than Star Wars.

Into Darkness sucked. I hope this one is better.

What am I, 12 again? Star-Trek vs. Star-Wars in the theaters?

You take that back rebel scum. Also this one is supposed to have a more star trek feel to it. Actually exploring distant planets vers spending 80 percent of the movie in space. That said I loved “into darkness”

Sadly, there was nothing about that trailer that had an even remotely “Star Trek feel.” It felt like Fast & Furious in space, probably because Justin Lin is directing.

Or you know, getting stranded on a distant planet aka 70% of the original series plot lines. Just because it’s not campy doesn’t mean it doesn’t have a star trek feel to it. Though I will say I am sad Abrams isn’t directing it but he kinda had his plate full this year

...And 90% of scifi plot lines. Getting stranded on a distant planet does not make it Star Trek. Neither does campiness or a lack thereof.

What does make it Star Trek is actual, thoughtful, and intelligent writing. Stories that deal with issues that are relevant to the every day person, explored through the use of characters with different perspectives. Stories about questioning the very things that we think make us who and what we are, and how we handle the mistakes that we make. Stories that are adept at both criticizing our shortcomings and praising our strengths. Stories that encourage to consider alternative perspectives, and examine our own approach to situations; ones that encourage to put ourselves in the shoes of a given character, and wonder what we would do if it were us. Stories that aren’t dependent on stupid throw-back tropes in a pathetic attempt to please fans that know better.

Little to none of the above has been present in NuTrek.

I actually enjoyed the 2009 film for what it was: a way to introduce, establish, and bring characters together for audiences, with the promise of greater development in future installments. Except that last part didn’t happen. There was no real character development, just more crazy action scenes, lazy tropes, and plot that had more holes than a brick of swiss cheese.

Into Darkness was Star Trek in name only, and if what they show in the trailer is what they opted to highlight and show off - the best of what they’ve got - then I’m afraid this one won’t be any different.

I wish I could be like you. All this makes me feel is bitter, crushing disappointment. Between this, 2009 and Into Darkness, I think I honestly would’ve rather the franchise died with Nemesis. At least, that way, there’s a chance it would’ve lain dormant for a while and been revived by someone who actually gave a shit about what made Star Trek special, not JJ ‘I never liked Star Trek’ Abrams.

All that remains is the name, and a thin veneer of recognisable aesthetic designs, wrapped around a series of well-made, generic space action films that have absolutely nothing of what made Star Trek my very favourite, well, THING. When I look at the kind of reverence Star Wars is getting with its reboot, the level of care and love that’s gone into recreating that tone, that setting, all those iconic elements, and compare it with what’s been done to Star Trek... It honestly makes me want to cry.

Of course, this is all my opinion and so on and so forth. Honestly, I wouldn’t even respond, but I was on the verge of making an Oppo post about how fucking bummed out this trailer has me.

I’m with you, man. Honestly, I think this trailer has done a better job of really hammering home just how much of a fucking bummer the direction Star Trek’s gone in since that shite reboot has really been for me than anything else could have.

Seeing Kirk flying through the air on a bloody dirt bike was like watching Uhura order a Budweiser in a bar, or Kirk decline a call from his deadbeat stepdad on a Nokia carphone, except I think it’s finally made me realise that the Star Trek I loved is fucking dead.

al;so, just a note. I think that a lot of the older people who watched the series are were in to it for the political aspect of it. with the new movies being made more and more ‘actiony’ with politics and what not taking a back seat, thats why a lot of the older fans dont like it.

this applies to a lot of stuff. star wars, star trek, F&F...

We can’t sell motorcycles and energy drinks with that, though.

I’m not against some shooty-shooty-bang-bang. I gobble down Baybusters with the best of them. But I was hoping we could get, maybe, a little bit of what made Star Trek great in there somewhere? Just...a tiny bit?

Nope. Sorry, but it’s dead, Jim.

Oh great....They’re destroying the Enterprise again....I don’t think I can take another one of these and it seems not so Star Trek anymore. That trailer doesn’t even feel like Star Trek nor does it look like it to me. I’ve watched every series and major movie to date, and even though Into Darkness was a cliche’d rehash of Wrath of Khan, it at least had a trek-vibe to it if nothing else.

I don’t have faith in this and it’ll be nothing more than an explody laser light show for the hippy new age audience, and I’m not even out of college yet!

How the heck can you explore a distant planets when you clearly crash the Enterprise into a planet in the trailer?

Yup. My biggest criticism of the new Star Trek movies (and the new Star Wars movie) is that they’re REALLY entertaining action films, but they’re kinda incredibly empty on substance.

I’m not a fan of Star Wars (in general) but I am a huge fan of Star Trek... in both franchises (but especially in Star Trek, which has always had a lot more plausible science in its science-fiction, so I’m really speaking more about that), the recent films just don’t cut it. There’s little of the nerdiness, drama, or canon culture that has always attracted me to Star Trek. *Sigh*

I still enjoy the movies for what they are, though: action packed two-hour long chase scenes.
